The first apartment building of the new Gables Brookhaven residential complex adjacent to campus began leasing apartments late last year, and 11 Oglethorpe students were among its first residents. After living on campus during their first year at Oglethorpe, students may live in Gables as part of their on-campus housing requirement. Meet Maria, and enjoy this tour of her new apartment!

- Maria Omar Alvarez is a sophomore at Oglethorpe University. She moved into her studio apartment in December 2015 and has been loving it ever since.

- Maria loves to cook and enjoys having her own kitchen where she can cook whenever and whatever she wants.

- The beautiful, contemporary kitchen is outfitted with all-new stainless steel appliances, designer cabinetry, a glass-tile backsplash and granite countertops. Beside her fridge is a Nest thermostat which intuitively learns her climate control preferences.

- “I decorated and chose everything myself,” says Maria. “I like it because it’s very quiet here. There are only six other students who live on this level.”

- Her studio apartment comes with its own washer and dryer, a welcome change from shared laundry rooms in residence halls.

- A deep bathtub, built-in shelving, and a high ceiling are only few of the many pluses of her bathroom.
